Conventional nail products are loaded with a cocktail of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)  chemicals that off-gas into the air as you sit in the chair. The most common culprits include formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), toluene (linked to neurological effects), and dibutyl phthalate (a hormone disruptor). 

For healthy adults, occasional exposure is generally manageable. For pregnant women in their first trimester, or for small children whose developing systems are especially vulnerable, the calculus is very different.
